Beltane: the ritual of the "maias"
celebrating light in Anadia
As May awakens, Bairrada is covered in gold. While the tradition of placing "maias" (yellow broom flowers) on doors protects the home, ancestral history celebrates Beltane, the Celtic festival marking the peak of spring and the fertility of the land. We begin our journey in search of the "maias" — the broom flowers that dye the landscape with sun. More than just a walk, this is a path to fulfill the ancestral rite of Beltane, gathering the protection and abundance that the tradition of decorated houses bestows upon us.
As we cross the fields and meadows of Moita, Alféloas, and Arcos, we dive into the soul of Bairrada.
Here, history reveals itself between the sacred and the profane: we visit religious monuments that hold millenary silences and contemplate urban art that dialogues with the present.
Our path is also made of memory, finding in the Bairrada Wine Museum and José Luciano de Castro Museum the heritage of a people who shaped the land with their hands and ingenuity.
The climax of this experience leads us to the top of Monte Crasto, where the gaze embraces the entire region, celebrating the triumph of spring and the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
We end this celebration with our traditional toast, tasting the iconic Bairrada sparkling wine and the richness of our regional gastronomy.
