on the "Bread, for God's Sake!" route
Reliving Old Traditions, Memories and Flavours
An ancient custom where children went door to door asking for «pão, por Deus» ("bread, for God's sake"). Following the 1755 Lisbon earthquake on 1 November, starving populations in a devastated city asked for food to survive, strengthening this community tradition over centuries across Portugal.
On this day, carrying traditional cloth sacks, we will knock on the doors of Anadia's local bakeries and pastry shops to recreate this experience and recite traditional rhymes.
• relive the traditional custom of asking for «santinhos» (traditional soul cakes)
• walk an urban and cultural route accessible to all ages
• support and value local commerce and intangible heritage

Cultural and Community Experience
We will relive the tradition of asking for «pão, por Deus», «bolinhos Santinhos» or
«santórios».
On November 1st, we seek out the traditional bakeries and pastry shops of Anadia to recreate this custom. As we knock on doors with our cloth sacks, we recite the ancient verses:
«Ó tia, dá pão, por Deus!
Se o não tem, dê-lho Deus!»
(A traditional folk rhyme asking for bread for God's sake)
On this walking tour we will discover Anadia, ascend to Monte Crasto to enjoy the magnificent views from its viewpoint, and descend to the Bairrada Wine Museum to learn about the history of this iconic (and bubbly) regional beverage.
